Dr. Lucía Durá
I was born in Mexico City and grew up in Ciudad Juárez and El Paso. After studying and working in different parts of the United States for a decade, I missed the desert and the creativity it inspired inspires, so I made a conscious decision to return to El Paso. Each day I appreciate the ability to speak two languages and to experience the world through multiple lenses and cultures. In my research, I focus on understanding and leveraging community assets to solve complex problems. I facilitate productive dialogues about risk to design sustainable social and organizational change. To do this work I collaborate with local and global organizations. I co-edit Technical Communication and Social Justice with Jerry Savage and serve on the Texas Center for Legal Ethics board of trustees. I am also on the Hispanic Servingness Research Council at UTEP, on the SEA Change Core Team, and on the Alliance of Hispanic Universities Task Force. I am committed to UTEP’s mission and find teaching and mentoring students an especially gratifying aspect of my career, both in the context of everyday work and in witnessing the impact of UTEP alumni in and outside of El Paso.
