Grant Focuses on Network Management

Stanford University has awarded a sub-contract of $124,000 to Michael McGarry, Ph.D., associate professor with UTEP’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, for research on network management. His yearlong project will advance the ability to understand the behavior of communication networks through network data analytics.
His work will uncover new network data analytics as well as provide both human and machine interfaces to those analytics. The human interface will be through visualizations and alerts while the machine interface will be through a software defined network analytics architecture.
“The software defined network analytics stack can be leveraged by network engineers to develop high-level software applications to automate network management,” McGarry explained. “Ultimately, we hope to automate some of the routine tasks that overwhelm network engineers such as those tasks related to fault detection and correction.”
There are two unique features of this project: the utilization of network data at various temporal and spatial scales, and the development of a machine interface to network data analytics through a software defined network analytics stack.
