1st Annual UTEP Visualization & Interactive Collaboration (VizInC) Competition
The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects invites all UTEP students and faculty to participate in the 1st Annual UTEP Visualization & Interactive Collaboration (VizInC) Competition. This student-focused competition offers an opportunity for students and their faculty coaches to demonstrate creative ways to use visualization to present complex problems. Interdisciplinary team approaches are encouraged. Data visualizations may include, but are not limited to: maps, charts, video renderings, graphs, data art, and 3D models. Submissions can be static, animated, or web-based interactive stories, but must have been in some way generated and/or processed by hardware in the VizInC laboratory, located in the Interdisciplinary Research Building (IDRB).
Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.
Competition Categories
Entries can be submitted under one of the following two categories: (i) Experienced (current) Users of Visualization Technology; (ii) Beginner (new) Users of Visualization Technology.
Deadlines

- Letter of Intent due by February 7, 2023 EXTENDED
- Project Abstracts due by April 14, 2023
- Project Presentations in the VizInC lab in the IDRB on April 28, 2023

VizInc Demos
Demos on hardware utilization and capabilities of VizInC system, (Visualization/Render wall, Multi-touch system, Mobile System or 3D system) can be provided in-person upon request between January 31st and April 14th. Please contact Frank Osuna (fjosuna@utep.edu) to schedule.

Eligibility
This competition is open to all current UTEP students (as of date of submission) and faculty. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students and faculty teams from across the UTEP campus community are eligible to compete.
All entries must be your original work, and you must have the right to use the data utilized in this competition.
Rules
- Team must be composed of not more than 5 students and 1 faculty coach. Can be interdisciplinary within and across UTEP Colleges and Departments.
- The presentation on the competition day MUST be conducted by students only: This is a student focused competition. A 20-minute (max) demo presentation by each team with 10 minutes transition time in between teams will be presented to a faculty panel.
- A statement of purpose must be provided in writing on the day of competition, April 28, 2023. This statement should describe the overall project, data used (along with source and authorization info), which and how the system(s) will be utilized, impact of visualization and any possible scientific discoveries if applicable.
- Visualization must be developed/processed by utilizing hardware in VizInC (Visualization/Render wall, Multi-touch system, Mobile System or 3D system).
How to Participate
Email the Letter of Intent (LOI), due February 7, 2023, by 11:59pm MST, to Andrea Tirres (altirres2@utep.edu). The LOI requires the following:
- Team Name
- Members Names, Student Classification & Emails
- Faculty Coach Name and Email
- College and departmental affiliation
- Title of work
- Topic/Issue(s) addressed
- Link to website (if applicable)
- Include a statement indicating that the work put forth is the team’s own work.
Format of Abstract due April 14th, 2023
Email the Abstract, due April 14th, 2023, by 11:59pm MST, to Andrea Tirres (altirres2@utep.edu). The Abstract requires the following:
- Team Name
- Members Names, Student Classification & Emails
- Faculty Coach Name and Email
- College and departmental affiliation
- Title of work
- Topic/Issue(s) addressed
- Link to website (if applicable)
- Include a statement indicating that the work put forth is the team’s own work.
- Project Background, Goals, Methods, Results/Conclusions and Implications (maximum 250 word limit)
