Arboreal Salamanders occur in southern California and Baja California, usually in oak woodlands and thick chaparral (Stock and Harris 1992).

Two species of Batrachoseps are known to occupy the Channel Islands at present and, along with Aneides lugubris, are the only salamanders known to be present (Mead et al. 2004). Batrachoseps also occurs on the mainland.

The Slender Salamander is a West Coast amphibian, occurring from British Columbia in the north into Baja California in the south. Fossils are rare.
