Dr. Patricia Juarez

Dr. Juarez is a native of the US-Mexico border region raised in Ciudad Juarez and now living in El Paso, TX. She holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences from UTEP focusing on environmental health issues and a Master of Public Health with emphasis in community health form the University of Texas-Houston School of Public Health in El Paso.
On her class “Environmental Justice for Minority Communities,” students not only learn about the environmental justice movement, but also apply the knowledge by identifying local border issues and serving the community by providing information and recommendations on potential environmental injustices during poster presentations to the public.
She worked as project coordinator at the Center for Environmental Resource Management at UTEP for over 13 years implementing numerous environmental health and justice interventions along the US-Mexico border. Lately, she has been working for Project Concern International as the Monitoring and Evaluation coordinator and has been a consultant for Migrant Clinicians Network, Border Environment Cooperation Commission, and the NIOSH/CDC.
Dr. Juarez-Carrillo is coauthor of numerous educational materials and training curriculums related to environmental health and justice intended for Spanish-speaking communities living in the border. She co-authored a chapter with Dr. Sara Grineski of the Sociology & Anthropology Department titled “Environmental Injustices in the US-Mexico border region” for the book “Social Justice in the US-Mexico Border Region” offering an overview of environmental injustices and recommendations to address potential injustices in the border.
