Thomas Ruggiero
Thomas E. Ruggiero (PhD, Bowling Green) is Associate Professor of Communication and the designer & coordinator of the Multimedia Journalism Program at UTEP. He recently served as a Senior Lecturer in Journalism for one year in the Department of Culture, Media & Drama at the University of the West of England in Bristol, UK., where he established undergraduate and graduate courses in multimedia journalism.
As a journalism professor for many years Dr. Ruggiero teaches both practical and theoretical journalism courses including Public Affairs Reporting, Feature Writing, Journalism Ethics and Multimedia Journalism. He earned his Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University, his M.S. from Shippensburg University, and his B.A. from the University of Oregon School of Journalism. He has professional experience as a daily newspaper reporter with The San Jose Mercury News, The Herald Mail, Hagerstown, Md., The Record Herald, Waynesboro, Pa., The Press-Enterprise, Bloomsburg, Pa., and The Medford Mail Tribune, Medford, Or.
As a researcher, Prof. Ruggiero's interests include: New Media Communication, Media Ethics, and Intercultural Media Effects. He has published research articles in many communication journals and books, including Communication Quarterly, the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Mass Communication & Society, and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics; and he regularly presents research papers at national and regional communication conferences. He co-created the borderzine.com e-magazine, serves as co-director of the Dow Jones Summer Minority High School Journalism Workshop, and is the official monitor for the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Editing Intern Program.
