Jennifer Carrillo
Intern

My name is Jennifer Carrillo and I am majoring in Political Science with a concentration in Law Politics and a minor in Feminist Philosophy. I am expecting to graduate this semester with my bachelor’s degree.
I decided to pursue a career in Political Science because my knowledge in politics was very limited and as I advance in my undergraduate career, I became interested in law and the justice system. In the future, I would like to attend law school and work as an attorney. I am especially interested in immigration law since living in the border region made me realize the importance of having immigration attorneys that are willing to help the community. I would like to work abroad to learn about other countries' justice systems.
During the past two years I have work as an undergraduate student assistant at the Entering Student Experience Program office. I have learned and developed communication skills, as well as professional experience by running the front desk and aiding students, faculty, and staff with different tasks. Additionally, I am part of the UTEP Student Government Association, for which I serve as a Senator-at-Large. This position has allowed me to advocate for the needs of the student body and find ways in which issues that students face can be addressed. Moreover, during the spring of 2021, I became a member of IGNITE at UTEP, a student organization that seeks to get women more involved in political activism; I currently serve as the campus liaison of this organization. This semester I am interested in interning with Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center to learn more about the process of aiding those facing immigration issues and gain experience since this is the path I hope to follow in the future.
I am very interested in learning about different cultures and languages, thus, in my free time I enjoy doing activities that will aid me with this. I like to watch movies or documentaries about other countries, as well as TV shows that will help me get a better understanding of their cultural aspects and traditions. Additionally, another hobby that I enjoy is baking, which helps me relax and distress.
I am very passionate about learning. I enjoy learning new things and perhaps that is one of the reasons why one of my main strengths is that I am a learner. I am also deliberative and dedicated to what I do, and I am not afraid to ask for help when needed, because that is part of the process of learning. From my internship this semester I expect to get an experience in which I grow, discover new skills, and further develop the skills I already have.
