Ana Guzman ’16

B.S in Civil Engineering

If you fly into El Paso, Chicago or cities across Virginia and Pennsylvania, chances are you’ll see a project that Ana Guzman managed.

Using the foundation she built for herself as a UTEP student, Ana has gone on to make a name for herself and represent what it means to be a Miner near the nation’s capital in Virginia, where she works as a quality manager for Mortenson: Construction and Real Estate Development.

The first project she worked on after graduation was one of the largest U.S. Army healthcare facilities ever built – the 1.1 billion-square-foot, $6.5 billion William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso. She also managed the development of a 57-story high-rise in downtown Chicago and other unique structures in locations ranging from the East Coast to the Midwest.

During her time at UTEP, she grew as a budding engineer through opportunities to conduct research at the undergraduate level, an internship with Turnkey Enterprises and through her study abroad experience in Turkey. Before taking her current position, she worked her way up at Clark Construction in El Paso, serving as Assistant Superintendent.

One thing that made her time at UTEP memorable was being able to take a class with a female vice president of a well-recognized construction company, who was fundamental to her budding success in the construction field.

“She had gone through internships, project engineers, project manager positions and now VP of this company, and it was very inspirational as a woman pursuing a career in construction,” Ana said. “And she was actually the first person who gave me the opportunity to be on a job site and see what a career in construction looks like.”
