About Us
The Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT) Program is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA Grant 1H795M081471-01 and 1H79SM084007-01). MHAT aims to equip first responders and mental health care providers/professionals in the El Paso county and Texas Region 10 counties (Brewster, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Culberson, and Presidio) with skills and resources related to promoting mental health. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certifications are provided as a part of the MHAT trainings.
Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour, evidence-based curriculum teaching individuals how to help someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. MHFA training increases awareness of mental health, reduces stigma around mental illness, and teaches individuals how to assess a situation, provide assistance, and connect someone with a mental health issue to resources.
To qualify for the training requirements individuals must be a mental health professional or a first responder from the El Paso, Brewster, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Culberson, or Presidio County. Examples of the types of individuals who can receive our training include the following:
- First Responders
