Navigating Online Courses - A Tutor's Insight
If you were to ask me about how my online courses are going, I would say they were going great. However, for most, online classes are difficult, tricky, and sometimes hard to understand. The best advice I can offer to those struggling with their online courses would be to manage your time wisely and keep track of the days. It’s easier said than done but let me explain how to make it fun and simple.
First, making a schedule is the biggest hurdle you must go through. Prioritize classes that are held over Zoom when making a schedule because face-to-face interactions are extremely important, especially for those who have never had online courses. Then, start scheduling some time to do classwork – like modules and activities – for all your classes. I recommend scheduling at least an hour each day per class, like how your classes would be if you were on campus. At first, this schedule will be hard to adjust to, but keep up the routine and it becomes easier.
Some more advice I would offer would be to have either a calendar, planner, or a list – either on your phone or a physical one – to write down due dates for assignments. I don’t have the best memory, so writing down assignment, quiz, and exam due dates helps me stay on track and submit everything on time. Make it apart of your routine to check for due dates everyday so you won’t forget.
Lastly, I would strongly advise that you keep a consistent sleep schedule. Now that we are all at home, it can be easy to forget times and days even exist. Of course, this is not an excuse for submitting late work or missing class. Get into the habit of waking up in the morning and going to sleep at night. Staying up all night and playing video games may sound tempting but try to save that for the weekend when you don’t have classes scheduled.
Time management isn’t easy but keep practicing! You’ll fall into a healthy daily routine in no time!
