UTEP Kicks Off Spring 2023 with Miner Welcome

UTEP is welcoming students to campus for the spring semester with a two-week event series called Miner Welcome. Students are invited to learn more about opportunities and resources on campus and connect with their fellow students.

The series kicks off with a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Centennial Plaza. Hosted by the Student Engagement and Leadership Center, the Multicultural Greek Council and the Black Student Union, the event will feature performers and speakers who will honor King and other civil rights leaders. Speakers and performers include Carleton Brown, Ph.D., associate professor in the College of Education, and student Abeni Merriweather, who will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” known as the Black national anthem. Free food will also be available.

With more than 25 Miner Welcome events scheduled, students will have no shortage of things to do their first two weeks back on campus, including learning more about the Student Recreation Center, sororities and fraternities, and other ways to get involved.

“The goal behind Miner Welcome is to help our students either as first-time students or returning students to engage on campus with our campus community and to learn about resources and opportunities for them,” said Charlin Jones-Chavez, Ph.D., assistant dean of students at UTEP.

Chalk the Plaza is a new event for the spring semester and takes place Monday, Jan. 23. Students are invited to show off their artistic prowess through chalk illustrations at the Union Plaza. First held in Fall 2021 and continued again in Fall 2022, this is the first time this event will be held in the spring.

“We have some amazingly talented students on our campus,” Jones-Chavez said. “This is an awesome opportunity for them to create some artwork that gets to live at the Union Plaza for about 24 to 48 hours.”

Students can also look forward to the Get Involved and Well-being Fair on Wednesday, Jan. 18 and Thursday, Jan. 19 at the Union.

“It’s a chance to interact with our student organizations and learn about departmental resources available to students,” Jones-Chavez said.
