UTEP Welcomes New Faculty Members for 2024-25 Academic Year

The University of Texas at El Paso welcomed a new cohort of tenured, tenure-track, and instructional faculty members to begin the 2024-25 academic year. The new faculty members come to UTEP with a breadth of expertise that ranges from science, health sciences, pharmacy, and the performing arts to humanities, education, engineering, social sciences, and business.

Along with their expertise and wealth of knowledge, the newest members of the UTEP faculty bring an unbridled excitement as they join the University and form part of its mission.

“I am excited and honored to be part of the UTEP family,” said Pedro Cortes, Ph.D., a professor of metallurgical, materials and biomedical engineering in the college of engineering. “I am joining UTEP because of its excellence in education and scholarship. I look forward to supporting the advanced manufacturing initiatives to further grow UTEP's leadership in this field.”

The cohort includes two new department chairs: Hind Al-Abadleh, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences; and Kendal Hirschi, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences. Al-Abadleh comes to UTEP from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada where she was a professor in the chemistry and biochemistry department. Hirschi comes to UTEP from the Baylor College of Medicine where he was a professor in the Department of Pediatrics and focused on the nutritional improvement of agriculturally important crops. 

“It has been great to welcome a new cohort of exceptional faculty who embody UTEP’s mission of providing access to an excellent education and producing research that improves people’s lives,” said John Wiebe, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. “At the heart of our university is a strong faculty dedicated to providing students with a transformative education; we look forward to seeing how this new cohort impacts the lives of their students.”
