UTEP Students Win 19 Awards in Advertising and Journalism

The Student Media and Publications department at The University of Texas at El Paso earned a national honor with a second-place win for Best Video or Underwriting Spot, “Residence Life,” created by students Michaela Roman, Rene Delgadillo and Claudia Flores in the College Media Business and Advertising Managers 2019 Awards.

The department also took home a total of 18 advertising and journalism awards at the 2018 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) contest for a variety of print and digital work, including five first-place awards.  

The TIPA awards are:

• Spanish Feature Story: Second place, Aylin Tafoya, “Llega Adan”

• Spanish News Story: Second place, Sergio Muńoz “Estudiantes”

• Spanish Opinion Writing: First place, Alexia Nava, “Dos de Octubre”

• Feature News Reporting Video: Honorable Mention, Daniel Mendez, “Football camp”

• General News Video:

  • First place, Claudia Flores, “O’Rourke Falls to Cruz”
  • Second place, Claudia Flores, “US Mayors”
  • Third place, Michaela Roman, “March for Our Lives”
  • Honorable Mention, Elenie Gonzalez and Gaby Velasquez, “Hundreds Gather”

• Multimedia Feature: Second place, Daniel Mendez and Claudia Flores, “Ode Brewery”

• Breaking News: Honorable Mention, Adrian Broaddus, “President retires”

• General News: Honorable Mention, Andrea Valdez-Rivas, “Marijuana”
