Annalise Gratovich

Annalise Gratovich is a works on paper artist based in Austin, Texas. Her life-sized figurative woodcuts, multilayered copper plate etchings, and print collages made from hand-dyed papers are informed by her identity as the second-generation daughter of a Ukrainian war refugee living in the American South, and more recently, her experience with chronic illness and disability. Her work is figurative and surrealistic. It reflects the graphic iconography of prints and murals of the US-Mexico borderland and traditional arts of Ukraine, the name of which means Borderland. Inspired by these lands of her heritage, she employs Indigenous Ukrainian motifs and South Texas flora and landscapes. A child of diaspora, she weaves together narratives of longing and belonging, and the mystery and mythology of home in the natural world. She creates reflections on personal and cultural identity in the borderlands where roots- both figurative and literal- are planted.

For nearly a decade, Annalise worked in fine art print publishing, curation, collections, and gallery management at Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Austin, Texas. She is currently the Matting and Framing, and Housings Preparator at the Blanton Museum of Art. Annalise is a founding board member of the annual PrintAustin festival and is a guest lecturer and visiting artist at universities across the country, including recent visits to Oklahoma University, OK, Edinboro University, PA, and CUNY Staten Island, NY. She’s been a recent guest lecturer at UT Austin, Ohio State University, IL, and Pratt, NYC. Her studio is housed at Canopy Austin and her upcoming exhibitions are with the Plains Art Museum, in Fargo, ND, Flatbed Press in Austin, TX, and Hecho Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. Recent exhibition venues include Paradigm Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, Morgan Paper Conservatory, Cleveland, OH, Mesh Gallery, Chicago IL, Highpoint Center for Printmaking, Minneapolis, MN, Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Norwalk, CT, Elizabeth New Museum, Austin, TX, and Till Richter Museum, Buggenhagen, Germany.

Annalise Gratovich es una artista del papel actualmente ubicada en Austin (Texas).
