Brian Shure

I am married to Elizabeth Ferrill, and we have two children.  I direct the Anderson Ranch Editions Program. I apprenticed to Tamarind Master Printer Ernest DeSoto while a student at Antioch College. I became a Master Printer at Editions Press, and then at Crown Point Press, where I also coordinated the China Woodblock Program. I taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, and Cornell University and conducted workshops in numerous studios in the U.S., China, Japan, Mexico, and Germany. Prior to becoming Director of Anderson Ranch Editions, I was production manager at Gemini GEL in Los Angeles. I am represented by Planthouse Gallery in New York, and my paintings and prints are in many public and private collections worldwide.

Artist Statement

I try to capture the essential energy of my subject in its forms and lines; to apprehend and reproduce the great life principle of the world, to paraphrase François Jullien. I work in response to my brush, ink and paper, and from memory, which I know to be as fluid and unstable as our world, characterized succinctly by Tennessee Williams as violent and mercurial, a perpetually burning building.

Estoy casado con Elizabeth Ferrill y tenemos dos hijos.  Dirijo el Programa de Ediciones del Rancho Anderson. Fui aprendiz del maestro impresor de Tamarind Ernest DeSoto cuando estudiaba en el Antioch College. Me convertí en maestro impresor en Editions Press, y después en Crown Point Press, donde también coordiné el programa de grabado en manera chino. Declaración del artista

Intento atrapar la energía esencial de mi tema en sus formas y líneas; aprehender y reproducir el gran principio vital del mundo, parafraseando a François Jullien. Trabajo respondiendo a mi pincel, tinta y papel, y a partir de la memoria, que sé que es tan fluida e inestable como nuestro mundo, caracterizado de manera concisa por Tennessee Williams como violento y mercurial, un edificio perpetuamente en llamas.
