Devon Stackonis

Devon Stackonis is a visual artist and printmaker specializing in mezzotint and intaglio techniques who often employs model making and paper miniatures in her process. She received her BFA from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in 2018 and worked as Assistant to Printmaking at Bucknell University from 2018-2020. Stackonis has exhibited work internationally in juried and invitational exhibitions, portfolio collections and collaborative projects. In 2020 she was an artist in residence at Guttenberg Arts in West New York, New Jersey and in the summer of 2023 was a resident at Atelier Circulaire in Montréal, Québec. Her work is held in the National Library and Archives of Québec and Special Collections at the University of Washington Libraries, Seattle. Currently she is pursuing her MFA in Printmaking at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and is a Curatorial Project Assistant at Tandem Press.

Artist Statement

Stackonis’ work serves as a personal reflection of the mountainous coal regions of Eastern Pennsylvania where she grew up and the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of an obsolete industry. She is drawn to imposing elements on the landscape such as abandoned industrial structures and machinery. These subjects generally evoke a sense of stillness or isolation, but also suggest power or importance, even long after they have been stripped of the purpose for which they were constructed. Rendering the image from a hand-built paper maquette furthers the psychological and generational distance from this heavy, extractive industry. She is compelled by the quickness with which these structures transition from being essential to obsolete, serving now as little more than shrines to the passage of time.

Devon Stackonis es una artista visual y grabadora especializada en técnicas de mezzotinta y calcografía que a menudo utiliza la fabricación de modelos y miniaturas de papel en su proceso. Recibió su licenciatura en Bellas Artes de la Kutztown University of Pennsylvania en 2018 y trabajó como asistente de Grabado en la Bucknell University de 2018 a 2020. Stackonis ha exhibido trabajos internacionalmente en exposiciones con jurado y por invitación, colecciones de portafolios y proyectos colaborativos. Declaración del artista

La obra de Stackonis es un reflejo personal de las regiones productoras de carbón del este de Pensilvania, donde creció, y de las repercusiones medioambientales y socioeconómicas de una industria obsoleta. Le atraen los elementos imponentes del paisaje, como las estructuras industriales abandonadas y la maquinaria. Estos elementos suelen evocar una sensación de quietud o aislamiento, pero también sugieren poder o importancia, incluso mucho después de haber perdido el propósito para el que fueron construidos. La reproducción de la imagen a partir de una maqueta de papel hecha a mano aumenta la distancia psicológica y generacional con esta gran industria extractiva. Se siente atrapada por la rapidez con la que estas estructuras pasan de ser esenciales a obsoletas, convirtiéndose en poco más que santuarios del tiempo transcurrido.
