Michael Barnes

Michael Barnes was born in 1969 in Michigan of the United States. He grew up outside the small town of Ithaca, where his family lived on a wooded plot in the midst of farmland. This wooded plot contained a 19th century family cemetery where he spent much of his youth playing and fostering his imagination for later ventures in his artistic life.He went on to receive his BFA from Alma College, Michigan in 1991 and his MFA from the University of Iowa in 1996, both with a focus on Printmaking. Michael developed a passion for the medium of lithography during his graduate studies at Iowa and has focused on this process for much of his work since. Michael now resides in St. Charles, Illinois, near Chicago, and is a professor of printmaking at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Artist Statement

The recent body of graphic works by Michael Barnes depicts figures that wander or are stranded within the vacuum that has been created for them by the specific world in which they exist. They are oblivious to their immediate surroundings and the menial tasks to which they are assigned or have voluntarily adopted to cope with their existence. The work addresses, in part, the destructive nature and absurdities that so readily prevail for humankind, along with themes of mortality and the philosophical questions of existence in general. The images are concerned with environment, social decay leaning towards an inward and isolated path, and cynicism about the historical evolution of so-called civilization and its effects upon the world and its inhabitants. Inspiration is drawn from histories, folk lore, and cultural events - both current and historical.

Michael Barnes nació en 1969 en Michigan, Estados Unidos. Creció en la periferia de la pequeña ciudad de Ithaca, donde su familia vivía en una parcela arbolada en medio de tierras de cultivo. En esta parcela había un cementerio familiar del siglo XIX, donde pasó gran parte de su juventud jugando y desarrollando su imaginación para sus posteriores aventuras artísticas. En 1991 se licenció en Bellas Artes por el Alma College de Michigan y en 1996 obtuvo un máster en Bellas Artes por la University of Iowa, ambos enfocados al grabado. Michael desarrolló una pasión por el medio de la litografía durante sus estudios de postgrado en Iowa y se ha concentrado en este proceso para gran parte de su obra desde entonces. Actualmente reside en St. Charles, Illinois, cerca de Chicago, y es profesor de Grabado en la Northern Illinois University en DeKalb.

Declaración del artista

El reciente cuerpo de obra gráfica de Michael Barnes representa figuras que vagan o están varadas en el vacío que les ha creado el mundo concreto en el que existen. Son ajenos a sus alrededores y a las tareas rutinarias que se les han asignado o que han adoptado voluntariamente para hacer frente a su existencia. La obra afronta, en parte, la naturaleza destructiva y los absurdos que tan fácilmente se imponen a la humanidad, junto con los temas de mortalidad y las cuestiones filosóficas de la existencia en general. Las imágenes tienen que ver con el medio ambiente, la decadencia social que se decanta hacia un camino introvertido y aislado, y el cinismo sobre la evolución histórica de la supuesta civilización y sus efectos sobre el mundo y sus habitantes. La inspiración viene de relatos, tradiciones populares y acontecimientos culturales, tanto actuales como históricos.
