In the series Main Street Mayhem, Tom Birkner presents his viewers with paintings that offer the toughness and grit of the post-industrial American landscape. The perspective of the working class in America has been an influence in Birkner’s body of work for the majority of his career: “The working class built the United States,” he says. Being an East Coast native made Birkner aware of the dramatic decay of industrial facilities, as he witnessed the rapid transformation of the region during his childhood in the 1970s. It is this epic dismantling of an era, coupled with cinema’s tendency towards spectacle that encourages Birkner to paint these moments within the ordinary world of a rough East Coast town. “Impasto,” or the thick application of paint, offers the rich textures of a beat-up city while displaying the many possibilities of the painting medium. Pennsylvania’s coal and steel towns were vital in Birkner’s development of imagery as well, as he visited these places to photograph the urban spaces. The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, is also a notable influence on Birkner’s work, as it narrates the journey of a father and son through a crumbling post-apocalyptic industrial landscape. First Light is a look at a dirt bike rider moments before throwing a fiery cocktail towards an unknown subject. There, Birkner highlights motion and finds tension in the moment before disaster. Heavy Metal II centers on the stillness of a young lady thoughtfully glancing at the viewer from the outside of a tarnished steel mill while reclining on her Mustang—perhaps to take a breather from the chaotic nature of industrial dystopia. 

Tom Birkner (MFA, The Pennsylvania State University; BA, Rutgers University)  is Associate Professor of Art in Painting at The University of Texas at El Paso. In 2018, he received the Artist Incubator Grant UTEP, College of Liberal Arts, Arts and Humanities Career Enhancement Award, and he has had more than 40 solo exhibitions including one in the Marella Arte Contemporanea in Milan, Italy (2002) and most recently Gerald Peters Contemporary (2020). Birkner has participated in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs including EXPO Chicago (2016) and the Seattle Art Fair (2019).
