Salt Sediment Interaction Research Consortium
Welcome to the Salt Sediment Interaction Research Consortium (Institute of Tectonic Studies).
The Institute of Tectonic Studies was established in July of 1998 by Dr. Katherine A. Giles.
The mission of S-SIRC is to pursue the understanding of tectonic processes and the evolution of tectonic provinces. The immediate goal of the institute is to foster the growth of expertise in tectonic studies of all Geological Sciences faculty and graduate students.
The goals will be achieved through:
-
Collaboration on research projects within the university, with other academic institutions and with industrial associates and benefactors.
-
Soliciting financial support from industrial and/or governmental consortia for specific research projects set forth by the Institute.
-
Publication of research results of projects supported by the Institute.
Organizational and financial support of workshops and special colloquia designed to bring outside expertise to UTEP.
The S-SIRC helps fund salt tectonics research by serving as an umbrella organization, directing money to fund faculty and student research that otherwise might not be funded through traditional means. One of the goals of the institute is to grow the expertise of UTEP's faculty and students in the area of tectonic studies. Students learn skills they don't necessarily obtain in class, including ArcGIS, Petrel, and other programs.
