MAT Science
The Master of Arts in Teaching Science (MATS) is designed primarily for working teachers, with courses offered evenings and summers.
This program provides an opportunity for students interested in teaching middle or high-school or entry level college science courses to earn an advanced degree with a primary emphasis on sciences that will be of value in their classrooms. The program gives students a broad background in graduate content sciences, and in science teaching and learning.
Students who are not teachers may enroll concurrently in an Alternative Teacher Certification Program.
Teachers may also choose to take additional courses leading to supplemental certification as a Master Science Teacher. All participants in the MAT Science program choose a content emphasis area in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Science or Physics.
Admission requirements for In-Service Teachers
Apply to the MAT Science program through UTEP’s Graduate School (see the page "Applying to the program" on this site). The GRE is not required, nor are the letters of recommendation. Minimum GPA required is 2.5. For admission to the MAT Science program a background in science is helpful but not required to participate. Leveling courses may be required.
For the most up-to-date information on admission and degree requirements and degree plans, please refer to UTEP's graduate catalog entry for the MAT program, or contact the graduate advisor.
