September 1, 2017
Elsa Quiroz Villa, Ph.D., (B.S. Mathematics, 1967) leads a grant from the U.S. Department of Education with mathematics faculty members Christina Mariani, Chair, and Art Duval, Professor. The grant is entitled Developing Evidence-Based Learning Communities in STEM Gateway Courses: Increasing Persistence and Timely Completion of STEM and is designed to develop learning communities in pre-calculus workshops based on the integration of cooperative learning and metacognitive strategies, where students become producers and disseminators rather than strictly consumers of knowledge. Villa stated, “I am excited to return to the mathematics department in my new capacity and to be able to share my love of mathematics with first year students.”
