Communication Studies
Communication Studies is one of five undergraduate sequences in the Department of Communication. It represents a general overview of the communication discipline and supports students pursuing teaching careers and graduate programs.
Students need to complete:
CORE REQUIREMENTS (9 hours)
COMM 1370 : Introduction to Communication Studies
This is an introduction to the various fields of communication.
COMM 3371 : Communication Theory and Analysis
This class covers various communication theory that applies to all communication disciplines, ranging from intrapersonal communication to mass communication.
Prerequisite: COMM 1370.
COMM 4372 : Methods of Research in Communication
Here, you will address various social science methodologies used to conduct research in the field of communication.
Prerequisite: Senior standing and MATH 1320 with a grade of "C" or better.
SEQUENCE REQUIREMENTS (18 hours)
Students must take:
COMM 2350: Interpersonal Communication
The study of contemporary interpersonal communication theory and research. Persuasion and Social Influence.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing and ENGL 1312.
COMM 2352 : Persuasion and Social Influence
An introduction to theories of persuasion that analyze the communication process as a social influence in various forms in the field of communication.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or instructor approval.
COMM 3353 : Intercultural Communication
The process of communication in culture, verbal, non-verbal cues, values and person perception in cross and intercultural interaction.
Prerequisites: Junior standing, COMM 1370, or instructor approval.
COMM 3354 : Small Group Communication
An examination of theories, research, and principles to small group communication.
Prerequisite: Junior standing or instructor approval.
COMM 3357 : New Communication Technologies
The theory and research of the effect of technology on human communication. Surveys the impact of the effects on human interaction mediated by various technologies.
Prerequisite: Junior standing, COMM 1370, or instructor approval.
COMM 4352 : Contemporary Rhetoric
Study of modern humanistic contributions to theories of communication and persuasion.
Prerequisite: Junior standing.
ELECTIVES REQUIREMENTS (9 hours)
