Living History
Living histories are the stories of individuals and communities who shaped and continue to shape day to day life, representing the very history of our border.
The Living History page features stories which reflect the border's past, present, and its outlook for the future. The border is a division between here and there, but at the same time, there is a constant renegotiation of what here and there mean. Traditional approaches to history view the border as a line of separation with two mutually exclusive parts, Mexican and American.
This line, however, often becomes blurred in terms of identity, culture, and citizenship. We also acknowledge the significance of other diverse ethnic and social communities that have impacted our border. This page presents a multi-dimensional view of the El Paso-Juárez area, which reveals the complexity inherent in the here and there of our border. We invite you to share your stories about living on the border with us in the hope that we can examine the contemporary issues and historical perspectives that surround us.
