What is the Peer Leader Program

  • Peer Leaders are engaged students who possess leadership qualities and are dedicated to helping fellow UTEP students succeed.
  • Peer Leaders work with entering students, such as freshmen and transfer students specifically, to help them succeed in their first year of college by helping foster a sense of agency, engagement, and belonging among students as well as promoting academic success and professional preparation.
  • Peer Leaders work alongside a UNIV 1301 faculty member and assist directly in the classroom. The course focuses on academic knowledge and skills, easing the transition from high school to college, and familiarizing students with campus resources.
  • Peer Leaders serve as intermediaries between the professor and students, as mentors, and as role models.
  • Beyond their work in the classroom, Peer Leaders also are part of a team-centric community in the Peer Leader Program. Alongside their fellow Peer Leaders, they have opportunities to build friendships, learn from one another, and develop a sense of belonging in the UTEP community. Many Peer Leaders describe the program as the “place where they found their people” on campus.
