Ways to get Caught Cheating
This page is dedicated to showcasing the different ways that students at UTEP have been caught cheating along with ways that students have admitted to using to cheat. This list is in no way complete or the only ways to cheat in the academic setting. This list is meant to be a deterrent to students at UTEP and to act as promotion of academic honesty. These cheating examples are broken up into 3 sections (Online Testing Environment, In-Person Testing Environment, and Collegiate Papers/Essays).
Online Testing Environment:
- Use of 3rd party websites for answers (Chegg.com, CourseHero, SparkNotes, Quizlet, etc.)
- Cell Phone Usage
- CheatSheet
- Writing on Body Parts (Arms, Legs, Hands, etc.)
- Usage of Split Screens to view a Study Guide
- Taping an answer sheet to the wall behind the computer
- Placing black tape over the computer webcam
- Placing a photo of yourself in front of the computer webcam in place of a live video
- Course group message to exchange answers during exam
- Paying students to take exam
- Students replacing commas and lowercase letter “i” with Russian or Ukrainian Cyrillic values to avoid detection by plagiarism software (confuses the auto scans—especially for Turnitin.com)
- Students taking pictures of all questions correct / incorrect on blackboard attempt to decipher right answers on questions graded as wrong
- students will interact with other students in other dorm rooms w/ open doors and communicate with signals, well enough to bypass detection by instructors
In-Person Testing Environment:
- Cheat Sheet on pens (when you turn the pen you are able to see the answers)
- Rubber band & a pin (a cheat sheet attached to a pin, the pin is secured to a rubber band to move up and down arm as needed)
- Writing answers on the desk and covering it with test paper or hand
- Wring answers on water bottles or juice boxes
- Usage of mini foldables
- Usage of sounds as answer codes
- Usage of Airpods for cheat sheet voice recording

Collegiate Papers/Essays:
- Submitting the same paper twice for different classes
- Copying and pasting from 3rd party websites
- Paying to have someone else write your paper
- Paying for or using someone else’s paper
