Learn about the tests you have to take as an undergraduate, graduate, or international student.
Undergraduate Students
- Texas Success Initiative Assessment Test (TSI): If you are an entering student and do not have college-level credit in math, English or reading-intensive courses then you must take the TSI test. (Test scores are required prior to moving to advising). You must be TSI-completed in order to take UTEP Connect courses, because no developmental courses are offered online. For more information, please visit https://www.utep.edu/student-affairs/testing/tsi/tsi-online.html.
Graduate Students
Graduate students may be asked to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); the required minimum scores varies depending on the graduate program of your interest.
International Students
All international students, graduate and undergraduate, must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
- For undergraduates, a minimum score of 61 is required on the internet-based TOEFL; you will need a score of 100 on the internet-based TOEFL to be exempt from ESL classes (note that we do not offer ESL online classes).
- For graduates: For graduates of institutions outside the United States where English is not the first language, a minimum score of 213 (550 on the paper-based exam) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required.
