About
Developed as a partnership among community organizations, academic researchers, and technology industry professionals, Sites of Translation User-Experience Research Center is envisioned as the place where social-justice oriented organizations come to request help in creating and disseminating their bi– or multilingual content and where students and researchers can build professional and knowledge-making relationships with community partners.
Community Partners
Sites of Translation User-Experience Research Center connects organizations that are committed to meeting the needs and highlighting the assets of linguistically diverse users with students and researchers who can
- help with creating and disseminating bi- and multilingual content (e.g., websites, web applications, informational tools).
- provide consultation and data-driven recommendations.
- connect organizations with other partners, locally and beyond.
If you are a community partner who would like to be involved with the center, please contact us at sitesoftranslation@gmail.com
Students
As part of their course and/or community-engagement experiences, bi– and multilingual students (both in the UTEP English Department and in partnering units and Universities) conduct usability testing with bi– and multilingual community members, providing local organizations with specific strategies that will improve their designs to better address the needs of their target user-base. Specifically, students at the center
- work with bi– and multilingual users to test the effectiveness of specific tools and technologies as outlined by our community partners
- conduct interviews and observe how users interact with the tools and technologies
- use their training in multilingual user-experience, translation, and technical communication to develop and present strategies for improving the design of these platforms, always using these projects as opportunities for research
- gain expertise in user-experience research, design, and community engagement, contributing to the success of local organizations who aim to successfully communicate and positively influence the experiences of linguistically and culturally diverse community members.
If you are a student who would like to be involved with the center, please contact us at sitesoftranslation@gmail.com
Researchers
This center will serve as a hub for national multilingual user-experience research, connecting researchers with community partners interested in forming mutually beneficial relationships. Researchers at the center
- provide data-driven arguments for the value of multilingual populations in the development and dissemination of contemporary technologies
- support partners and students in raising and answering questions about supporting and advocating for multilingual users
- have access to study projects in the center, since all projects come with consent from submitters, granting the center the opportunity to use projects as research adhering to IRB standards.
